Fees & Insurance

At Sean Burns Therapy, we believe in transparent, straightforward pricing. Below is an overview of how insurance, out-of-pocket payments, and initial consultations work.

1. Free Initial Consultation

Starting therapy is a personal decision, and finding the right therapist is essential.

  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Cost: Free
  • Format: Phone call (I will call you at your scheduled time)

During this consultation, we will briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, answer any questions you have about my approach, and ensure scheduling and clinical fit.

2. Using Health Insurance (In-Network via Headway)

I partner with Headway to manage insurance verification, copay collection, and billing for clinical sessions. Headway verifies your coverage and estimates your out-of-pocket costs before our first session so there are no billing surprises.

Accepted Insurance Plans:

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) PPO
  • Aetna PPO
  • Cigna PPO
  • Curative
  • Carelon Behavioral Health
  • Ascension (SmartHealth)

Check Your Coverage & Book Directly:
You can verify your exact copay and schedule directly through my Headway Provider Profile.

3. Private Pay (Out-of-Pocket)

If you do not have insurance, choose not to use insurance for greater confidentiality, or have an out-of-network plan:

  • Individual Psychotherapy Session: $150
  • Initial Intake Assessment: $150
  • Payment Methods: Major credit cards, debit cards, and HSA/FSA cards accepted.

Need-Based Sliding Fee Scale

To help make care accessible, I offer a sliding fee scale based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Can you use this calculator to determine how your income compares to the federal poverty guidelines? Remember to include family members in the calculation!

👉 FPL Calculator (fplcalculator.com)

I don’t need to know your exact income, just which bucket you sit in below:

Income Level (% of Federal Poverty Line)Fee per Session
Under 200% of the federal poverty line$55 (minimum)
201% to 250% of the federal poverty line$60
251% to 300% of the federal poverty line$65
Over 301% of the federal poverty line$70

Sliding scale spots are subject to availability and can be discussed during our free 15-minute consultation.

Out-of-Network Superbills

If you have out-of-network mental health benefits with your insurer, I can provide a monthly itemized receipt (a “Superbill”) upon request that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

4. Good Faith Estimate (No Surprises Act)

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, health care providers are required to provide individuals who are uninsured or self-pay with a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for scheduled psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing before your scheduled service. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit cms.gov/nosurprises.
